What do I have to do to get started?

What happens at my intake appointment?

Most intake appointments happen virtually—all you need is a phone.

Here’s what to expect:

Speak to a counselor – You’ll meet individually with a licensed substance use disorder counselor who will review your clinical history to see if our program is the right fit for you. You’ll provide a urine sample. Don't worry—it’s okay to test positive for opioids. (We expect it!)
Speak to a Physician – Next, a doctor will assess any medical concerns and determine the right dose of medication to manage cravings. They’ll send your prescription to the pharmacy for pickup. If you have trouble getting your prescription, our team is here to help.
Join Your Group – You'll connect with others in recovery during weekly group meetings for support and accountability. These meetings will most likely happen virtually. Once a month (or more) you will meet with your physician to check in on your medication and treatment plan.

When are groups?

We do our best to accommodate your schedule. Group sessions are typically held on weekdays between 8 AM and 8 PM, though exact times vary by location. During your intake appointment, your counselor will help you choose a group time that works for you.

Most sessions are held virtually, so you can join from anywhere using just your phone. If you prefer in-person support, you're always welcome to visit your local office during business hours.

What are groups like?

Groups are small (10–15 people) and meet at the same time each week with the same members. Each session lasts one hour and is led by a licensed counselor.

If you ever need to miss a session, we offer makeup groups to help you stay on track. A physician joins at least once a month (or more, depending on your state) to answer questions about medication and support you in developing a plan to taper off when you're ready.

What is Suboxone?

Suboxone (buprenorphine-naloxone) is widely regarded as a "gold standard" medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Like methadone, it helps ease withdrawal symptoms and cravings, reducing opioid dependence and supporting long-term recovery.

However, Suboxone has some distinct advantages over methadone. It typically has fewer side effects and safety concerns and can be prescribed for pickup at a pharmacy, eliminating the need for daily clinic visits.

How Does Suboxone Work?

Suboxone is a long-acting partial opioid agonist, meaning it binds to and partially activates opioid receptors in the brain and central nervous system. These receptors play a critical role in regulating pain, emotions, and other essential functions.

Unlike full agonists—such as methadone, fentanyl, heroin, or prescription painkillers—that fully activate these receptors and can create a "high," Suboxone’s effects are more moderate and longer-lasting. This balance makes it effective for treating opioid use disorder without causing a "high."
